What’s Your Dosha, Baby?: Discover the Vedic Way for Compatability in Life and Love

Coffey, Lisa Marie. What’s Your Dosha, Baby?: Discover the Vedic Way for Compatability in Life and Love. Marlowe: Avalon, dist. by Publishers Group West. May 2004. c.240p. ISBN 1-56924-472-3. pap. $14.95. SELF-HELP

Coffey, a lifestyle and relationship expert, takes a fun and stimulating look at Hindu Ayurvedics, a “science of life” designed to increase productivity and creativity as well as identify love matches. Taking a mainstream, upbeat approach that will help Americanize this unfamiliar subject, Coffey describes three personality types (doshas)–Vata, Pitta, and Kapha–which are made up of different combinations of the five basic elements (i.e., air, space, fire, water, and earth). Everyone has one dominant dosha, but Coffey asserts that “all three doshas express themselves in some way for everyone.” Although initially reminiscent of “typing” books like Tom Maddron’s Living Your Colors: Practical Wisdom for Life, Love, Work, and Play, this book doesn’t waffle as much. Nine chapters explore the basics of each combination (e.g., Vata man and Pitta woman), while the rest of the text addresses topics like parenting, relationships, and even diet. Recommended for larger public libraries.
